Introduction to the Lecture
Metaphysics Λ famously makes no direct references to other portions of the Metaphysics, and it is, accordingly, often said to be an independent treatise. Of course, we do not know when and for what purpose it was composed, but it is not usually realized how well it fits, just where it is, with the rest of the Metaphysics. Most obviously, book Λ provides the discussion of the highest causes that books A and α led us to expect. There are more subtle and interesting connections.
Introduction of the Speaker
Edward C. Halper is Distinguished Research Professor and Josiah Meigs Professor of Philosophy at the University of Georgia. He is the author of several books and more than fifty papers on a wide range of topics.
