Description

The basic outline for this mini-course will follow the book, Confident Pluralism: Surviving and Thriving Through Deep Difference. The professor will argue that Americans can and must live together peaceably in spite of deep and sometimes irresolvable difference. They can do so in two important ways. The first is by insisting upon constitutional commitments to protecting the voluntary groups of civil society through the rights of assembly and association, and by facilitating and enabling dissent, disagreement, and diversity in public forums. The second way of living together is by embodying its aspirations of tolerance, humility, and patience in civic practices.

Introduction of the Speaker

Prof. John Inazu teaches at Washington University in St. Louis, where he is the Sally D. Danforth Distinguished Professor of Law and Religion (with a joint appointment in the Law School and the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics). His courses include criminal law, law and religion, and the First Amendment. His scholarship focuses on the First Amendment freedoms of speech,  assembly, and religion, and related issues of political and legal theory. His first book, Liberty’s Refuge: The Forgotten Freedom of Assembly, was published by Yale University Press in 2012. His second book, Confident Pluralism: Surviving and Thriving Through Deep Difference, was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2016.
