主讲人简介
 
美国天主教大学（The Catholic University of America）哲学博士（1991年），现为加尔文学院（Calvin College）英语系教授，主要著作有Elizabeth Tyrwhit's Morning and Evening Prayers（2008，2009年获Josephine A. Roberts Scholarly Edition奖）。主要主编作品有Elizabeth I and Her Age, a Norton Critical Edition (2009, 2010年获 Translation or Teaching Edition Award)，Bakhtin and Religion: A Feeling for Faith (2001)。新近主编的A Cambridge Companion to Literature and Religion也即将出版。
 
Abstract:
This lecture unpacks the ethical dimensions of the debate among linguistic determinists, exemplified by William Dowling, indeterminists, exemplified by Jacques Derrida, and the Russian thinker M. M. Bakhtin. First, it looks at the underlying assumptions of the determinists and indeterminists, the historical contours of their debate in the 20th century, and the consequences of their views of language for life as it is lived in the world. Second, it considers Bakhtin’s alternative understanding of language and lived experience as a form of “perspectival realism," a term that embraces the dynamic complexity of Bakhtin’s thought.
