The School of Philosophy at Beijing Normal University is one of the leading institutions for teaching and research in philosophy and social science in China. At present, the School has formed a teaching and scientific research system from undergraduate level, graduate level, doctoral level to post-doctoral research station, etc. All majors have strong teaching and scientific research strength. In recent years, the school’s philosophy discipline has stabilized at 51-100 in the QS ranking, and ranked level A in the fourth round of the Ministry of Education's discipline evaluation.

　　The history of the School can be traced back to the Department of Political Education which was founded in 1953. In June 1979, the Department of Philosophy was established on the foundation of the Department of Political Education, which was the first philosophy department among the higher normal universities in New China. In April 2003, the School of Philosophy and Sociology was established on the foundation of the Department of Philosophy. In January 2015, the university adjusted its disciplines, the sociology major was separated from the School of Philosophy and Sociology, and the School of Philosophy and Sociology was renamed as the School of Philosophy.

　　The School of Philosophy comprises two undergraduate majors (departments) in philosophy and PPE (Politics, Economics and Philosophy), among which the philosophy major is approved as a national first-class undergraduate major construction site. The school has one post-doctoral research station, one conferring institution for doctoral degree in first-level discipline (Philosophy), ten conferring institutions for doctoral degree in second-level disciplines (Marxist philosophy, Chinese Philosophy, Foreign Philosophy, etc.), and eight conferring institutions for master's degree. Among these disciplines, there are 1 national key discipline (Marxist philosophy) and 1 Beijing key discipline (Foreign philosophy). Moreover, the school comprises a national key research base for the construction of textbooks: an integrated textbook research base for moral education in primary and secondary schools, and a key research base for the humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education: Center for studies of Values and Culture. The school holds 3 academic journals: Frontiers of Philosophy in China, Studies on Contemporary Values in China and Ideological and Political Course Teaching . According to the University's "one body and two wings" running pattern, an international philosophy research center has been set up on the Zhuhai campus. In the history of its development, the School has formed four main research directions: philosophy of value, philosophy of cognition, classical philosophy, and political philosophy. During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, 6 major research projects were supported by The National Social Science Fund of China and 63 other projects were approved; during the "Thirteenth Five-Year plan" period, 7 major research projects were supported by The National Social Science Fund of China and 89 other projects were approved.

　　Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era is the guideline for the School of Philosophy’s entire development. The School has attracted outstanding teaching fellows and a number of renowned scholars such as Shi Pan, Ma Te, Zhu Qixian, Qi Zhenhai, Yuan Guiren, Han Zhen, Yang Geng and other scholars once worked here and made a great contribution to the development of philosophy in China. There are 2 Changjiang Distinguished Professors, 1 leading academic in philosophy and social sciences from the National “Ten Thousand Talent Program”, 2 young top-notch talents from the National "Ten Thousand Talent Program", and 2 candidates from the National "Ten Million Talent Project" within the School. In addition, 2 professors are the selected members of the "Trans-century Talents Program" of the Ministry of Education; 9 professors are the selected members of the "Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University” of the Ministry of Education; 2 professors are the selected members of the “Beijing 100-person Project”, and 1 professor selected as “the Excellent Beijing Young Talent”. At present, the School implements the strategy of cultivating outstanding talents, is committed to training high-level philosophical talents and PPE professionals, and has built a "Solid foundation, interdisciplinary, and international" trinity training model. Over the past century, a large number of outstanding alumni have emerged, including the famous Marxist philosopher Li Da, the Chinese philosopher Zhang Dainian, the former Minister of Education Yuan Guiren, and the "model of the times" Huang Wenxiu.

　　The School of Philosophy has endeavored to promote its internationalization and has established close cooperation with the philosophy departments of Oxford University, Stanford University, Rutgers University and other universities. The School has been hosting the Confucius Institute at the University of Macerata, Italy, the BNU Philosophy Summer School, the International Value Philosophy Forum, the International MA Program in Chinese Philosophy, and publishing English magazines, which had an important impact on the international philosophy academia. Based on profound academic traditions and human resources, the School is committed to promote the application of achievements in scientific research and social service work, participate in the construction of national high-level think tanks and organize the formulation of the national standard for the teaching quality of undergraduate programs in Philosophy and Marxist Theory, and the National standards of middle school political courses. Furthermore, The School has achieved important social effects by holding a variety of seminars, training programs, academic and cultural activities, carrying out the popularization of philosophy and social science knowledge, and promoting traditional Chinese culture.
